How to get your business recommended by Google AI Mode

To show up in Google AI Mode, win the places layer first: a correctly categorized Google Business Profile decides whether you're even eligible, your city's best-of lists and directories ground the main recommendations, and your review count rides on every map card. AI Mode is where a category mistake quietly removes you from every answer — and where being on a map card is not the same as being recommended.

AI Mode is a different animal from AI Overviews

Google AI Mode is the full conversational search experience, and it behaves like a maps product that writes prose, not a chatbot that happens to know your city. In our panels its answers consistently assemble from three layers: the places layer (Google Business Profile cards with ratings and review counts), a grounding layer of local directories and best-of lists, and the written recommendation itself. You can be present in one layer and absent from the one that matters.

In Nameworthy’s panels, Google AI Mode was the best surface for content-strong businesses — it crawls many pages per answer and maps a site’s own content semantically.

The category gate comes first

Before AI Mode reads a word of your website, your Google Business Profile category decides whether you’re in the candidate pool. This is the sharpest — and cheapest — failure mode we measure. In our panels we’ve watched a business filed under the wrong category disappear from every relevant answer, and we’ve watched the reverse: businesses that don’t belong appearing in answers because the places layer had them filed under the target category. The machine trusts the filing.

Five-minute audit: open your Google Business Profile and check the primary category against what a customer would actually ask for. Then check the secondary categories. A wrong primary category isn’t a ranking penalty — it’s non-existence in the places-first answers.

AI Mode has two tiers, and our run logs show them moving independently: businesses appear on map cards — name, rating, review count — while the written answer recommends someone else. If you’re in the cards but not the prose, you’re visible as an honorable mention and absent from the list that gets the phone call. The prose tier draws on what the writing can cite: review volume it can print, best-of lists it can lean on, and concrete published facts it can quote.

The grounding layer: your city’s best-of lists

AI Mode’s written answers repeatedly cite the local directory and best-of layer — established city publications, bar-association or industry lists, the “best X in [city]” pages that have existed for years. In one market we measured, a single best-of page was cited seventeen times across the answer set. If you’re not in your city’s version of that layer, the prose tier has nothing to corroborate you with.

What to do, in order

  1. Fix the category (primary and secondary) on your Google Business Profile today.
  2. Build review volume steadily — AI Mode prints the count on your card, and the prose tier reads it.
  3. Get into the local best-of and directory layer your market’s answers actually cite — we identify the specific pages when we measure a market.
  4. Publish quotable concrete facts on your site — prices, offers, credentials — because the prose tier lifts exact language, and machine-readable fact pages demonstrably get retrieved.
  5. Then measure, because a map-card sighting will fool you into thinking you’re winning. The tier you’re in is the finding that matters.

Common questions

Why is my business missing from Google AI Mode answers?
The most common cause we measure is at the places layer, not the content layer: a miscategorized or thin Google Business Profile filters you out before your website is ever considered. In our panels we have watched businesses filed under the wrong category vanish from every relevant answer — and unrelated businesses filed under the right category appear in answers they had no business in. Check your primary GBP category, then your review count, then your presence in the local best-of lists AI Mode repeatedly cites.
I appear on the AI Mode map but not in the recommendation text. Why?
Those are two different tiers, and our measurements show they move independently. AI Mode can show your map card, with your rating and review count, while the written answer recommends someone else — visible as an honorable mention, absent from the list that gets the call. Cracking the prose tier usually takes the signals the written answer cites: review volume, best-of-list presence, and concrete published facts it can quote.
Do local best-of lists actually matter for AI answers?
In our measurement they are one of AI Mode's most-cited grounding sources: a single city best-of page was cited seventeen times across one market's answers. A profile in your city's established best-of and directory layer corroborates you off-site, which is exactly what the main recommendation lists draw on.
